Websites doing well in PR & Alexa with no external links?

I have been enjoying learning how traffic travis works and I have one burning question.How is it possible to have a website with no external links ( or only 2) and a huge pr and a fantastic alexa rating? After all we are learning about links ,this seems to fly in the face of the links system,does it not?

Neither of those pages have huge pr. The first one was pr 5 and the other pr 4, from what I can see.

Pages can have high pr with no external links if they have a lot of good quality backlinks, that is one obvious way. :)

 I guess pr 4 or 5 seems huge to me because I have a 0 at this point.thanks
