Sales copies from manufacturers - Will it affect my PR?

If you create a website that sells products that are marketed widely on the internet (eg health supplements) and you use sales copy that is found on the manufacturers site do search engines look at that in a bad way? I am wondering if my page wouldn't rank as high in search engines if I use sales copy that is from the manufacturers page compared to me typing it all myself from scratch.
Any opinions on that would be appreciated.

Google doesn't really like duplicate content. This may or may not affect your site in the short term. Just depends how much content I guess.

If it's not too much then it should be okay.

Go to this link and put the page of your site in the search field.

This will tell you whether you've taken too much content.

http://copyscape.com/

Copyscape will see if there are other pages that exists on the net with the content on your page. If there are then it will show up in the results.

Hope this helps,

Cheers

... and hopefully it is appropriate I do it here.

If you are sending the same article out to a host of article directories, all with the same content bar perhaps a tweak to the anchor text link back to your site/blog, would this not constitute duplicate content. If not, why not?

Thanks

Diogenes, it probably would, but it would depend on the layout of the site, because google looks at a pages code, not just the text within it, so it may or may not get flagged. Either way, it's still worth it.

I was going to go ahead with articles - and have already submitted some. But I thought the question needed to be asked.

Usually people either use article submissions to get backlinks to their money sites or to promote products they're selling.

If you are using articles for backlinking purposes then you'll be fine because the dup content is on other peoples sites not yours.

The important part of the process is that you have backlinks from other sites already spidered by google. The more the better.

Now if you use it to market affiliate products then I don't think there's a problem there either.

So to summarize...Send out your articles to get backlinks or to get exposure to your affiliate product, but make sure your own site is original and check that it is by using copyscape.com, that way google will be happy. Once your pages are indexed by google will know the originator of the content.

Sure you can add your own links, banners, ads etc, but make sure the majority of your site has original content.

Cheers,
Frank

Sorry - I should have been more specific.
I was thinking of where I created my own original article and having placed it on my own site/blog then also submitted this to the article directories (with changes made to the anchor text link but otherwise the same in content).
Same situation?

Thanks

As long as you make sure it's indexed on your site, go nuts submitting it to other sites. What other sites do cannot hurt your site at all, it's part of googles way of thinking. So remember that when you start thinking about links etc.

So Sean,
Are you saying that I can have an article on my site and submit that same article to a directory and that will be ok?

I would honestly just take a few sentences out....... then re-arrange the sentences you have... just in case the other sites gets credit for that article.
