Importance of keywords on main page - Will it affect my SEO?

Hi guys,

Just a couple of questions, If I were to put a really high competitive word like golf into my main page as my main keyword will this affect the SEO of my other pages? or will the spider look past that and see that I have some really good keywords on my other pages? Should I put a lower competitive keyword on the main page or just stick with the one I got?

Thanks
Wes

No it will not hurt you at all. It will just increase the relevance of your site's theme is all. The only downside would be that it is extremely difficult to rank for just the word golf, your time would be better spent at least on a 2-word keyphrase.

Hi Adrian,

So will this mean that I will not be able get my website high up on the search rankings unless I change my keyword on my main page?

On page factors are important, but the most important thing is getting backlinks.

If you got millions of backlinks with golf in them, you wouldn't have to have golf on your site at all to rank well. But, unless you can figure out a way to get millions of backlinks, you'll probably want to put your keywords on your page :)

And I wouldn't ever optimise for "golf". 353,000,000 competitors is a tad too much for your first go.

Hey Sean,

I think I have heard somewhere correct me if I'm wrong, that when you link to other pages on your website like say for example that I link a peice of text with dog training in it to an article with dog training as a keyword, tht this will improve my rank for that keyword, am I right or wrong on that one?

Cheers

It will help as long as the link has a good silo structure and is on theme with the page that is doing the linking.
