Which e-commerce platform should I join?

Hi. I'm a newbie in e-commerce. I want to try to open an online store, but I don't know what to begin. I search and find out some platforms. Big ones are Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce. Which should I choose to start? Is there anyone selling on these platforms? Please help!

@dungbt,
you are right to ask people who use already a platform. Users are more honest than platforms comparison paid websites.

There are platforms that offer a free trial. For example, I think, Lemonstand and Shopify: 14 days free trial.

The page suggested by maryt is really informative (I just read the comparison between Amazon and Ebay), and here is an informative but also funny written article from their blog for beginners like you and me
https://www.salehoo.com/education/starting-online

If you google "ecommerce platforms comparison 2018" and then klick "Images" you get a lot of diagrams. (Diagram = no long text to read!)
At least you can familiarize with some of the most important concepts on this field.

I think the dream of every e-seller is to become platforms indipendent and build an own website. Good luck!

It is also important where you are located.
Salehoo's blog offers another article with a interesting infographic about the country distribution of the platforms users ("Usage by physical location of businesses"). Really interesting stuff

TrustRadius comparison
About themselves, they write "The TrustRadius Top Rated awards are unique in that they are an unbiased reflection of customer sentiment, based solely on user satisfaction scores."
https://www.trustradius.com/buyer-blog/ ... erce-2018/

This is a comparison of e-commerce platforms based on users (e-vendors) reviews.
(I wouldn't take into consideration the platforms with less than 100 reviews.)
Ecwid is the >100 reviews platform with the highest star rating (4.8).
Considering both reviews number and star rating, the three best are (spoiler alert!) ...
Shopify (2.000 reviews),
Big Commerce (200 reviews),
Woo Commerce (460 reviews).

Hi bryanwilliams,

Its great to know that you are going to join eCommerce world. An eCommerce online platform is a software that lets you build, run, and manage an online store or business. It provides the necessary tools for creating your product catalog, and managing other day-to-day operations.

You may choose the best suit for your needs from following top 5 eCommerce platforms to launch an online store:

1- Shopify
Pros:

You can integrate your shop with your social media accounts
It is one of the most feature-rich eCommerce platforms available

Cons:

You are liable of paying a transaction fee if you do not use Shopify payment.
Many of the most useful extensions are paid for extensions.
Any customizations attract an incremental price.

2- BigCommerce
Pros:

Features very handy tools and features for managing your store
as flexible shipping options, and even lets you give live quotes
Integrates with Amazon, eBay, and most social network websites
Cons:

Only provide 7 free themes, so you’ll have to invest in one for a professional look
Has no native POS feature like other platforms do
Multi-vendor support is still wanting

3- YoKart
Pros:

Targets SMBs so already has features for them built-in
Packed full of features that will help you get everything going fast
A lifetime license gets the source code. You can therefore make modifications if desired

Cons:

Customization will require help from someone with knowledge of PHP
Big enterprises will be required to do extensive customizations.

4- Magento

Pros:

The self-hosted option gives you total control over what you can do
Packs a long list of features that will make your work absolutely easy
There are multiple plugins and themes available to further extend its functionality

Cons:

You will require some technical know-how to get the most out of the platform
The basic version is free but the enterprise version will set you back $20,000+ annually.

5- Tictail
Pros:

Very easy to set up
Designed to make customizations stress free

Cons:

Lacks payment processors

If you are looking for cost-effective platform then I must say that wocommerce would be the best platform for you, moreover Woocommerce comes with some support features, which other platform avoids. If you are planning to launch a big business with lot of products then I suggest you to opt for platform like Shopify or BigCommerce. If you are into apparel business then Magento is the best option for you.

Hope this will help you to pick the right eCommerce platform for your online business.

All the very best!!

You have already got so many choices through this thread and one of the most trusted and I think the old one is Shopify.

Shopify is an online platform for all forms of e-commerce. It allows you to set up your online store and sell whatever you wish (goods and services).

You can organize your products, customize the way your store looks, accept payments (online and credit cards), track and respond to orders, and you can do it all within Shopify’s interface.

Hi,There are many Online Store scripts prevail on market. An user frequently purchasing products on online may come up with many names as his preferred brands or stores. The demands of users is the reason behind the rapid rise in the number of ecommerce apps. Users are preferring a shopping app where they could get more options than an online shopping app with less number of options. So developing a multi vendor online store can surely attract users and so can generate more revenue. Here is an easy way for it as Appkodes readily have a multi vendor B2B online store script on all platforms to help your cause. Visit: Appkodes Fantacy

It would be great if you share some more insight about your business. There are several eCommerce platforms in the market conducive for different types of businesses. For instance if you are into apparel business then Magento is the best suited platform for you. If your budget is limited then it is better to opt for Woocommerce, which is another popular platform these days.

Other than that Shopify is also a better platform to look for. But, if you are willing to spent some extra busk, then I will suggest to go for a custom made site, which is entirely developed from scratch, which will offer you more design options and higher level of security.

I would be able to suggest you better if you share your busyness type.

What kind of platform to choose depends also on the products you want to sell as well... I imagine you would get better and more precise recommendations if you provided that piece of info.

I recommend OpenCart and WooCommerce, of course there are more solutions than just that, but I like their customisation and speed and everything else probably just like you did lately. I never tried to learn how to adopt any other platforms than those two for my needs.

I am with Shopify and Magento, I have tried many things in past and really like those two out of all others you can bring now. Tictail mentioned here probably will even be closed very very soon and that's really it. I do not get why it works still, I got messages already.

I can recommend magento 2. You can find tons of extensions for your special needs, so you will not face problems with lack of features you need. (I mean that you can add any feature you can imagine with an appropriate extension.)
