How Do I Stop Spam Comments?

Hi Guys,

What is the best way to stop spamy comments from clogging up my inbox on my site?

Do I have to use a paid service for best results? One that uses a captcha?

Many thanks..

You can use Akismet. This is the default plugin in Wordpress for catching spam comments. You can activate and it will monitor the comments posted on your site. It allows you to review the marked comments and let you decide if you want to publish or delete.

I don't think you need to get a paid plugin for this, unless you're getting comments by the hundreds daily.

Hope that helps. Have a good day!

I get hundreds of Spam comments daily on my blog and if I miss a day deleting them it can turn into hours of useless work. All comments have to be approved before they appear and I use Askimet but I still have to delete the comment. Is there any way to deter people from spamming?

It is very hard to deter people from spaming as they are hoping to get backlinks, and this is usually done automatically via a program.
You can stop comments altogether by not allowing comments, via the 'quick edit' menu for each post.
I do this as I found that very few comments were of any benefit to me.
If you get a large amount of comments, you can delete them all quickly, by using a plugin,
I think it is called 'bulk delete' or 'mass delete'. Do a search and you will find it.
On some of my sites with the comment enabled, if I only visit once a week, I can find 4000-5000 comments waiting for approval, so this plugin is very useful.

You should use the Facebook comment plug in. Very customizable with good spam controls. You can set it so that all posts go to moderation rather than instantly viewable.
