Spider is nothing but search engine bot each and every search engine have separate bots. each bot crawl data and stored in search engine data base.

Yes, it's really important to have nice link structure for search engines to see. There are various one like Google Bot mobile and desktop, Bing bot for same, Yandex bot for same purposes, Baidu bot for same purposes and anything else you can think of like even forgotten AOL bots;)
