Questions about search Engine Mechanics? (Not optimisation)

Hi everybody,
I'm new to affiliate marketing and am wondering about the way your physical location plays into your SE ranking. I have beeen using a site called similarweb.com to look at the traffic of other sites, I think they tap into google analytics for their info, not sure. What I noticed was traffic comes from fairly localised areas: UK sites get most of their traffic from the UK, US sites from the US etc. Only once they get bigger, do they get international traffic. (Or so it seems, anyway) I have 2 problems with this: firstly, I live in the UK and will be moving to France permanently next summer, so I will move to a French ISP. If my site hasn't grown to international proportions by then, will my English language site only appear among French competitors as it will appear on google.fr? My obvious worry is that I'd have no chance to grow. My second questions follows on from that: I would like to tap into the Indian market, because it's huge. How do I get there? Do search engines factor your location into thgeir rankings? If not, then I don't understand why the initial traffic is so localised. Can anybody help me with this? Thanks

Hi,

For your questions:

UK sites get most of their traffic from the UK, US sites from the US etc. Only once they get bigger, do they get international traffic.

All websites get traffic from other countries, even local websites get traffic from other countries as well. IT IS NOT TRUE that you will only get traffic from other countries once the site gets bigger. I have a one-page website and I get traffic from more than 10 different countries.

I think what you see in the data are websites that "prioritize" traffic from a certain country only, so definitely with marketing and SEO you can achieve getting traffic mostly from your preferred market/location.

firstly, I live in the UK and will be moving to France permanently next summer, so I will move to a French ISP. If my site hasn't grown to international proportions by then, will my English language site only appear among French competitors as it will appear on google.fr? My obvious worry is that I'd have no chance to grow.

Your location DOES NOT MATTER but WHERE YOUR WEBSITE IS HOSTED DOES in terms of traffic-- but then again no huge deal for this. Search engines can read your hosting company's IP address and this is a small factor that they use for ranking websites in search engine rankings pages (SERPs). So if you want to get visitors from different countries, you can host your website in a US IP address. At least, this is the IP address that most websites use if they want to target a worldwide audience. But like I have said, IP addresses does not matter much. It is just a very small factor for search engines. If you want to be seen worldwide, you need to do online marketing and SEO.

I would like to tap into the Indian market, because it's huge. How do I get there? Do search engines factor your location into thgeir rankings? If not, then I don't understand why the initial traffic is so localised. Can anybody help me with this?

You need to do local SEO if you want to market the website to local market.

I do agree. I get traffic to my blog from all over the globe although a huge chunk is from the U.S. The fact that the hosting company is from the U.S has a lot to to do with that.
I don't believe your geographical location plays too big a part. Like Maryt said, it will initially. But once your website gains in popularity, the rest of the world will flow to it.

Thanks to both of you for reassuring me about this. I have another question, which kind of follows on from this: I looked at a few affiliate websites and noticed that a lot of them linked to Amazon US or some other US based sales site. Living in the UK, I would not buy via this link due to the high postage, I would instead search for the item on Google und buy from a UK-based site. I had a look on Amazon, your affiliate ID is only valid on the site you have the agreement with, so if you have a US ID, you can’t sell items on the UK site or Germany etc. Your ID is obviously in your widget, so what is the best thing to do? Would I apply for a contract with Amazon.com to start with because the market is bigger? And then see how things develop? Thanks again for helping me with this.

Amazon is not the only physical product store that you can promote. If you like to promote UK stores that sell physical products, you can simply do a quick search on this in Google.

Like this blog site for example. It provides a list of alternative e-commerce sites that are available in the UK. You can check each to see if these sites offer a program for affiliates.

If you want to promote Amazon products, you can also do so since there is Amazon UK as well. You can apply as an affiliate here.

Hi,

You can tap into the local market or any specific country you want if you want to. You can do this with both free and paid traffic. There are different marketing strategies that you can do to target these markets.
